Meaning of Classroom management

Classroom management means management of all resources in the classroom there may be human resource as well as material resources. It is a organizational function in which tasks are performed in a variety of settings. Which results in the inculcation of certain values such as respect, self-direction and group cohesion etc. classroom management is a comprehensive term including tasks and activities which mainly involves the teacher and the student and also the supporting factors such as available resources, the climate of classroom and the institution as a whole.

Classroom management is an useful and systematic designing of the class to create conditions in which effective teaching and learning occurs. It involves the creation of of such democratic environment where students can learn and work together with their teachers.

Teacher is the main authoritative figure in the classroom. He can adopt various techniques and strategies for an effective classroom management. A teacher should do everything in the classroom in a pattern and systematic manner so that he becomes successful in managing the class in a right way.  Teacher can adopt the following techniques and strategies-

1. Systematic work schedule

The teacher must organize the classroom in a systematic manner. The teacher who conducts his/her teaching without any work schedule may create confusion in classroom.

2. Teacher’s attention

Every student wants to draw teacher’s attention. Teacher’s responses in the classroom such a smile of teacher, word of praise, silence, his encouragement etc. has a great influence on student’s behavior. So a teacher should have mastery or skillful in making use of his attention in an effective and systematic manner.

3. Teacher’s behavior

Behavior of teacher also has a great impact in the classroom. Teacher should be positive, a sad face and irritable teacher may create owe in the classroom. So a teacher’s behavior should be good and inspirational to the students.

4. Students involvement

Students must be encouraged to involve in various functions and co-curricular activities of the institutions. When students engage themselves in such activities will also take active part in classroom management.

5. Selection of class captain

It is a technique for classroom management. The teacher must carefully select the monitor of the class who is academically or sports or in both at the top and socially active, energetic and legal one.

6. Class culture

Class culture in an important strategy in classroom management. The teacher tries to build a good class culture by giving role to the students and play them well. It helps in developing a healthy way of viewing class discipline as the students learns what is acceptable and what are not acceptable forms of behavior.

An effective teacher will create a good learning environment. Class culture does not mean that the class will have absolute silence through the period but the class realize that when it has to observe silence.

7. Make clear rules

It is another strategy for managing the classroom. Teacher need to be selective in their class rule. The rules should be clear to the students so that they understand what is acceptable and what is not.  These will help for classroom management.

8. Learning the name of students

A teacher can control or manage the classroom by knowing the names of the students in an effective way. For examples

“John, stop talking and finish your work”

Is more effective than simply say “.stop talking and finish your work.”

Calling by their name gives an immediate sense of well being.

9. Providing more visual content

Teacher can make classroom active and interesting by using visual aids of teaching rather giving lectures on theory. Visual aids will stay for a long time than just test materials.

10. Maintenance of time

The time table is the form of planning. It helps the teacher to know what is to be done when and where. It ensures smooth and systematic working of class.

11. Arrange classroom properly

The teacher must be able to observe all students at all time and monitor work and behavior. The students sitting arrangement should be proper place so that they can observe the teacher and his presentation without turning or movement.  Proper arrangement of the classroom will help the teacher to complete his teaching smoothly.
